Samsung breaks speed record on Galaxy S20 + with innovative and cheaper technology

Samsung announces in a press release that it has broken a new 5G speed record thanks to new technology. Throughput reaches up to 5.23 Gbps under laboratory conditions. Samsung’s trick is to combine the 5G mmWave network with part of the 4G frequency bands.

Samsung announces it has broke a new 5G speed record thanks to a completely new technology, E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity (EN-DC). During a demonstration in the Samsung lab in Suwon, South Korea, the firm has reached the crazy speed of 5.23 Gbps. To achieve this feat, Samsung engineers had the idea of combine part of the 4G network with 5G networks. Concretely, the protocol uses 5G 800 MHz frequencies, mmWave antennas and 40 MHz 4G frequencies in parallel.

The advantage of this technology is that it is compatible with terminals already on the market. For its tests, Samsung indeed used a Galaxy S20 +. The fact of simultaneously using 4G and 5G networks concomitantly is very interesting for operators, since they can inexpensively strengthen their coverage, while increasing speeds. This is not Samsung’s first very active speed record on 5G technologies.

The South Korean giant reached a transfer speed of over 4.3 Gbps last year. A result which itself supplanted the previous record of the firm, obtained in 2019, of 1.7 Gbps. But alongside these hybrid results, theThe manufacturer has also achieved crazy speeds in mmWave-only – the network which will be the most expensive and the longest to install.

Thanks to the exclusive use of high frequencies mmWave and under laboratory conditions, Samsung had then reached 8.5 Gbps. But the advantage of these new results is that these speeds are within reach simply by strengthening existing technologies. Samsung’s press release quotes Ji-Yun Seol, one of the group’s vice presidents in charge of network equipment: “Through this demonstration, Samsung is proud to demonstrate a new record breakthrough in 5G data transfer speeds”.

The manager continues: “This reinforces our commitment to deliver the best possible 5G solutions to our customers as well as our long-term support for operators, so that they can accelerate the arrival of the benefits of 5G to their users”. With the exclusion of Huawei 5G technologies in the most important markets, Samsung has stepped up its R&D efforts. Efforts that seem to appeal to a growing number of operators around the world.
