Samsung acquires Cynora, a German specialist in OLED screens
Samsung is strengthening its presence in the screen market by acquiring the German group Cynora. According Bloombergthe group paid approximately $300 million to complete the transaction.
As part of the transaction, Samsung acquired Cynora’s intellectual property and technology, but not its engineers. The company based in Bruchsal (southwest Germany) laid off its employees in recent weeks before the takeover was completed. Samsung was already an investor in the company, LG and other display makers were also backing the start-up.
Also according to Bloomberg, Cynora was cash-strapped and needed the takeover to be able to repay some of its investors.
Cynora’s technologies claim to make OLED screens more energy efficient and more durable. The company says it can improve the efficiency of blue sub-pixels in OLED displays, resulting in better power efficiency, better colors and higher resolution. This technology can be used to make better foldable screens.
These improvements are going to be interesting for future smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and other Samsung products. See now when customers will actually see a difference. It may not be until 2023 at best.
