Recognize songs from YouTube and more with Shazam

Apple acquired Shazam three years ago and regularly updates the app. It is one of the most popular song recognition applications. Handy if you’re at a festival and hear a song, but don’t know the name. Just start the app and hoppa: you know the title.

Shazam has now also added a function that allows you to recognize songs on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, among others. But if all goes well, the function will work in even more music apps.

To recognize a song from YouTube, for example, you must first start the App Shazam and press the blue button. Then switch back to the YouTube app to play the song. Shazam then uses your iPhone’s microphone to recognize the song. After a few seconds you can go back to the Shazam app and see what song it was.

Music recognition through the Control Center

However, there is an easier way with music recognition option to recognize songs in YouTube. If you want to know the name of a song in a YouTube video, open the Control Panel during playback. Then you can tap the music recognition icon (the Shazam logo) there. Close the Control Center and Shazam will then quickly name the song.

Add Shazam to Control Center

Starting with iOS 14.2, you can already add Shazam to Control Center to recognize songs. Is Shazam not yet in Control Center for you? Then you have to add the app yourself. You do that like this:

  1. Go to settings and open Control Panel;
  2. Scroll to ‘Music recognition’ and click on the plus sign;
  3. Now when you open the Control Panel, you will see the Shazam icon.
