Deposit on small bottles
You have been paying a deposit for bottles with a volume of more than 1 liter for years, just like on beer bottles with a volume of less than 1 litre. There was no deposit scheme for plastic drinking bottles with a content of less than 1 litre. The period without a deposit for those bottles will come to an end from 1 July, according to Statiegeld Nederland. Since the bottles are smaller than the 1 liter bottles, the deposit to be paid is slightly lower, at 15 euro cents. For plastic bottles of 1 liter or larger you pay a deposit of 25 cents.
Supermarkets are now in the transition period. Some plastic drinking bottles with a capacity of less than a liter are already sold with a deposit. Whether this happens depends on the supermarket’s stock. It is also possible after 1 July that you can purchase (small) plastic bottles without paying a deposit. After all, a deposit is only counted on new stocks; supermarkets may continue to sell old stocks that do not bear the deposit logo.
Handing in plastic bottles
It is hoped that the deposit will encourage consumers to return the small drinking bottles. Old bottles for which no deposit has been paid cannot be returned. You can see from the receipt whether you currently have a deposit bottle at home. In addition, bottles with a deposit are also given the deposit logo.
If you don’t know exactly what to look out for, you can go to the Deposit app. Via the app you can scan the barcode that is also used when returning the bottles. You will then immediately see whether the bottle contains a deposit. That barcode is also crucial when returning the bottles, says Raymond Gianotten, spokesperson for Statiegeld Nederland. Without the barcode, a bottle will be rejected when returning and you will not get the deposit paid back.
You will soon be able to hand in plastic drinking bottles in Dutch supermarkets, at the petrol pump and in the long term at the five largest train stations, up to the 50 largest train stations in 2023. The deposit for bottles returned at the train stations will be refunded directly to your account. bank account. At other locations you often receive a receipt for the value of the drinking bottles that have been returned.
