As Dr. Malcolm once said, “Life will find a way.” That’s the famous words he said in the legendary 1993 Jurassic Park movie. her. One of them was the Jurassic World Evolution building strategy from the British studio Frontier Developments, which was published in 2018 and in which the developers used their extensive knowledge and experience with strategies and the tycoon genre. But now the question is how life and especially dinosaurs are doing in this sequel…

Change precedes the fall

Let’s say at the outset that it’s hard to describe how innovative the second part is. It certainly cannot be said that it does not offer any news, but I have a feeling that with each improvement there has been a step backwards and some changes are not even desirable as a result. The first such case is the game modes themselves. This time in the menu we will find a campaign, Chaos Theory mode, which offers alternative scenarios of the five films so far, a challenge, which is a real challenge and it is necessary to build a park according to the assignment and under strict conditions, and finally a sandbox. After a few hours, however, it turns out that the campaign is really just a lengthy tutorial, so it’s not a big challenge. So the main focus is more on the theory of chaos. You can’t deny the imaginative processing, moreover, it really is the essence of the film series, but going through that “campaign” still left me a bitter feeling instead of satisfaction and the joy of completion. Challenge mode offers a slightly different approach to the game and it’s not bad at all, but someone may perceive it as a grind, so everyone does not have to sit down. However, the bigger problem is if someone wants to build just for fun. Although sandbox mode should be ideal for this purpose, this is not the case. You are not the master of everything here, you do not have everything that the game offers, unfortunately. You have to unlock these things first, just by playing the previous modes. So those who just want to relax have very limited options, although otherwise they can set a lot of parameters, such as completely shut down diseases or get rid of the threat of bad weather.

The news and changes do not end there, fortunately we can talk about a number of successful ones. To the delight of many players and enthusiasts, the game now also offers water and flying dinosaurs. Of course, new buildings in the form of lagoons and aviaries are connected with this. The game on dinosaurs certainly did not spare and in the basic game it offers more than eighty in total. Sometimes you catch them and transport them to your prepared enclosures, other times you let your scientists enchant with DNA and you raise dinosaurs. In addition to all this, you must go on expeditions and look for more and more fossils that will enable and improve these genetic games. In addition to digging and DNA research, scientists are also working on your dinosaur wards and exploring conveniences and new buildings of all kinds. That is why it is necessary to think carefully about who to hire, what task to assign him to, and it is also necessary to pay attention to their rest. It costs a lot of money, but also a lot of time and many extra steps, which make the game uncomfortable, especially in a big rush, and generally don’t improve the gameplay in any way. A huge advantage, however, is the addition of the ability to speed up time, which at least slightly reduces the frustration of repeated long waits.

That’s how we live here…

The dinosaurs themselves are a little more demanding and picky this time around. They demand comfort and this will of course ensure that they meet a variety of requirements. Some want more trees, others nuts, some want a lot of water and fish, others you have to let goats into the paddock so they can catch them themselves. Overall, it is interesting to see how they behave in the environment itself and how they behave towards each other, especially thanks to the large number of sophisticated animations. More than once, I’ve found myself waiting for one of my carnivorous dinosaurs to decide to hunt. However, taking care of dinosaurs is complicated by other employees. This time it’s not scientists, it’s rangers and paramedics. You can place a place in the paddock to which a group of rangers can be assigned to regularly monitor the dinosaurs, but it has its drawbacks. Dinosaurs are not satisfied with just one scan, which reveals their desires, based on which you adapt the enclosure to them. Afterwards, they demand it repeatedly, although there is no reason to do so. Instead of the assigned unit taking care of itself, most of the time it is necessary to re-enter commands and hope that they will be executed. However, this is not a matter of course. The same is true of healthcare, which also requires more steps than would be playfully enjoyable. Sometimes it happens that even though one of the units has a whole chain of commands entered, you can find her talking to the base and doing nothing. Needless to say, in the event of an outbreak or perhaps even a tornado and the destruction of all fences, this is not exactly ideal. In addition, there is nothing better than hunting mobile phones out of the stomachs of several dinosaurs at the same time – surprisingly, even if you don’t even have any visitors in the park in the given scenario.

Of course, what kind of strategy and proper building would it be if the game took care of everything itself and we did nothing. But here some innovations lead to exaggerated micromanagement, which is more of a nuisance. It is not so difficult to build a park on its own and ensure its basic functioning. You can break a few dinosaurs out of eggs quite easily, you have a paddock in a while, so you can focus on improving comfort for visitors. But achieving satisfactory quality, earning and at the same time moving forward is much more difficult than it seems at first glance. Every little thing comes to mind and you repeatedly give instructions, send scientists to bed after a few researches so they don’t get too upset, fix fences all the time, put dormant dinosaurs, research drugs or think about food stalls, and most importantly pray for more natural disaster or dinosaurs do not beat each other. You don’t want visitors to see for yourself how your pride falls dead to the ground, it’s really not a nice sight. And to make matters worse, be prepared for the fact that some dinosaurs like to hide. Finding one of the dinosaurs at times is really a hassle, especially when it disappears among the trees, then you have no chance. The transport of sleeping dinosaurs can also be a bit more complicated, as the game in this selection will not tell you what kind of cursor you are hovering over. There are simply things that deserve at least a little more practical approach, and I’m not just talking about choosing dinosaurs, but also the staff.

But the fun remains

But enough has been said. Despite all this, it is still a very successful strategy with strong foundations that hold the whole game together. And it’s definitely not just that the game offers dinosaurs, whose (z) birth and modification of their DNA is in any case one of the most successful parts of the game. Exploring fossils and putting together the various DNA found is just the beginning. Each egg can be negatively and positively affected and it is up to you whether you decide to keep only the “healthy” or dare those that predict a greater susceptibility of dinosaurs to disease or aggression. Furthermore, this time the construction of the park is very successful, mainly due to the nicely clear interface. Perhaps only if from time to time he did not protest the terrain itself, which at first glance seems to be problem-free, but for some reason he will pull you to build a building or just stretch the sidewalk. This can sometimes spoil the mood and especially the construction plans. In addition to paddocks or aviaries, every good park must have facilities for employees, a science center, incubators, but of course also tourist attractions. There really aren’t many of them and it is necessary to keep in mind that not all visitors long for adventure or the beauty of nature, but also for luxury, for example. Stalls with food, drink, ice cream or gift items thus complement rest areas or luxury hotels with a view of dinosaurs. It is also possible to build an educational center, a cinema, a games room and many other things. They will be pleased to be able to modify these buildings in various ways, whether in terms of focus, layout, color and material or accessories. Perhaps only the offer of decorations could be more extensive.

The license itself does a lot here, because it simply doesn’t get tired of watching the buildings known from the movies grow right in front of your eyes. All this is well supported by a sound that covers absolutely everything, not just prehistoric atrocities and nature itself. Above all, the construction of fences had an almost meditative effect on me. In addition, there are well-known musical motifs that support the already great atmosphere. I must not forget the nice dubbing, and of course I was most pleased with Jeff Goldblum. The dialogues themselves are not a masterpiece, but they do not offend or disturb in any way, most of the time they actually seemed quite nice to me. The dinosaurs look almost alive and the landscape also offers some nice views, but at least on PlayStation 4, the game is bothered by the occasional dropping of shadows and small jams. If you envy the visitors of your parks, you can explore them yourself. There are views from the towers, observatories or even a monorail leading over the entire park, or you can ride the route around the park. But the game also allows you to become a ranger on your own, so it is possible to personally take care of scanning, repairs or go for a photo shoot. However, the game is relatively strict in this respect in terms of collisions, so it is not possible to drive into denser vegetation. And speaking of, you won’t run into a dinosaur either. But he does to you. And if rides in the park or in nature are not enough for you, you can of course fly by and also take responsibility for sleeping the dinosaurs. The fact that this is not the basic mechanics of the game, I was very pleasantly surprised by the control of the jeeps and the helicopter. It’s a pity I can’t say that about more aspects of the game.

It might seem that the negatives outweigh the pros in this review, but in reality this is not the case. Rather, I just try to cover everything that the second part does in contrast to the first. It brings news, it brings changes and, as we have already said, not all of them have fallen on fertile ground. At times, the game seemed more like a DLC to the number one, which doesn’t sound very good considering the price of the game. In any case, there is no denying that Jurassic World Evolution 2 simply stands as a strategy, although some of the designers’ design decisions can be questioned. Not only for dinosaur fans, this act has a lot to offer, at least until the game Prehistoric Kingdom is released in a similar spirit, but with a slightly broader scope. The good news is that the developers have already taken some of the players’ complaints to heart and are preparing to fix them with an update. So maybe at least these improvements will be useful.
