Rain World has one of the most realistic video game worlds

Rain World is unlike any other game. And even if you don’t want to play it, I think you might be interested in the world of Rain World – it’s so realistic it’s almost spooky.

I had never heard of Rain World until I saw it – six years after the game was released, since Rain World was released in 2017. If you’re anything like me, then I wholeheartedly recommend you give Rain World a look. It doesn’t matter whether you want to play it yourself or watch someone else do it in the Let’s Play.

So what’s so special about Rain World? It simply has that most fabulous ecosystemthat I’ve ever come across in a game. And by that I mean a fantastically animated science fiction world in which you have to prevail against incredibly clever and living creatures. You play as a snail cat that has to survive and hunt in a devastated ecosystem. It is always important to find out what you can eat and what you want to eat. But that’s just the beginning of Rain World’s genius.

Rain World: A game that should get a lot more attention

There is one downside to Rain World, depending on whether you want to think of it as such: the game is rock hard and unfair. But every unfair death you will die here has something to do with the principle of Rain World: A realistic ecosystem of obscure beings whose spontaneity and vibrancy has rarely been better simulated than in any other game. Would real life in a dangerous forest full of wildlife be unfair too? Naturally.

This is what Rain World is all about: It’s a survival platformer where you have a little snail cat plays, who is separated from her family. Suddenly all alone in the world, you must explore the ruins and landscapes of a destroyed world. You hunt for food and end each “day” by finding a quiet spot with a full belly – there you can sleep while insanely heavy rain hits the world.

The game is divided into different ecosystems: sections of the world that each have their own monsters and food sources. But not every creature here is dangerous (although there are many): You will encounter lizards that will attack and eat you, but you can also tame them with food. Later you meet intelligent beings, trying to communicate with you. If you manage to keep a certain peace with them, you can trade with them. However, if you attack them, they will remember it – and will hunt you down.

Every being in Rain World reacts not only to you, but also to the environment. Hunters also hunt other small animals, not just you – and their tactics when hunting are only partly predictable, since the AI ​​of these beings reacts individually to the environment. Even the movements of all the animals in Rain World are unpredictable, because the animations are partially procedurally animated. That means, that the bodies in this game are animated in real timeaccording to the environment and your own game inputs.

The result is an eerily real pixel art world that is unpredictable. In addition, Rain World tells a story that is melancholic and thought-provoking. If you like platformers, survival games or original sci-fi stories, you shouldn’t miss Rain World. But be warned, it’s a very tough game and for some, simply watching the game in video format may provide a better experience.
