We have not seen any progress in the amount of RAM in the mobile for a long time. Not that we really need more than the 16 GB, but in the past, the shift has taken place almost every two years. We now learn that the Chinese memory manufacturer SK Hynix has started production of 18 GB modules.
SK Hynix starts production of 18 GB RAM + the first smartphone with such a capacity
The manufacturer informed about it on its website and adds that this capacity will be intended for premium smartphones. You will be able to use 18 GB of memory to process high-resolution images and games. We can also imagine that the higher capacity of LPDDR5 memory will allow you to record 8K video at 60 frames per second. None of the current smartphones has yet crossed the 8K limit at 30 fps. The latest flagships, such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra or the Xiaomi Mi 11, only support 8K / 24 or 8K / 30 fps.
SK Hynix also expects that this will allow applications to bring more demanding and better features that will allow us to achieve more with our mobile phones.
„This product will increase processing speed and image quality by expanding temporary storage as capacity increases compared to the previous 16 GB of memory,“Said a representative of SK Hynix.
They label the memory and add that the latest 18GB of memory can transfer data at speeds of up to 6400 Mbps. By comparison, it’s 20% more than current memory offers – 5,500 Mbps. This theoretically allowed you to move ten 5 GB movies in ten seconds.
The first smartphone with the mentioned memory capacity will be prepared by a gaming mobile phone from Asus – Republic of Gamers (ROG) Phone 5.
