Price & content of the streaming service

Disney + has been available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland since the beginning of 2020. Find out what Disney + costs and what the streaming service offers you here on GIGA.

The Walt Disney Company has long been more than just the animation film maker from Los Angeles. The huge media group includes Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios and 21st Century Fox. With the diverse range, Disney is now offering its own streaming service.

The devices on which the streaming service works and an overview of the content can also be found here on GIGA.

Disney +: Cost of the streaming service

In the first year, Disney + was still significantly cheaper than the competition from Netflix & Co. With the expanded offer by Star, Disney now wants to break away from the reputation of the children’s streaming service, which is also reflected in the price. That’s how it costs Monthly subscription For new customers now 8.99 euros instead of 6.99 euros and that Annual package discounted 89.99 euros instead of the previous 69.99 euros.

At the time, Iger justified the lower price with the fact that Disney has a wide range of products, but would still offer less content overall – accordingly, the costs for the end customer should also be lower. In addition, they want to “attract as many customers as possible at the start of the service”, as Iger explains.

Disney + content

You can read here exactly what content can be seen on Disney +: Disney + – an overview of all series and films from the streaming service. At the presentation at Walt Disney Studios (Burbank) on April 11, 2019, Disney CEO Robert “Bob” Iger presented the finalized plans for the Disney Plus (Disney +) streaming service. Disney planned for the first year of the streaming service 10 new films and 25 new series to bring it exclusively to its own video-on-demand platform. However, due to the pandemic, some projects have now been postponed.

The initially exclusive content of the Disney streaming service includes, among other things “The Mandalorian”, “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”, “WandaVision”, “Artemis Fowl”who have favourited the remake of “Lady and the Tramp” as well as several short films from Pixar and Disney. And the future blockbusters in the cinema are also included in the Disney + subscription after they have been shown on the big screen. For example, “Toy Story 4”, “Avengers: Endgame”, “Frozen 2”, “Star Wars: Episode IX” and the real-life version of “The Lion King” can be viewed directly via Disney + at no additional cost. In addition to the new and partly exclusive productions from Walt Disney, there is also content from Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and National Geographic found on the service.

With the takeover of 21st Century Fox through Disney, the company also owns the rights to “The simpsons”, “Family Guy”, “How I Met Your Mother” and many other series and films. Due to the family-friendly orientation of the streaming service – apart from the 30 seasons of the yellow family – not much of the Fox productions could be seen on Disney +. From February 23, 2021 but should that be with the category “Star” to change. This includes, for example, series such as “X-Files”, “24”, “Desperate Housewives” or “Prison Break”, which should make the Disney + offer also interesting for adult viewers.

No own streaming service for Marvel & Star Wars

In 2017, there was still the consideration of differentiating between the various Disney offers and thus offering several streaming services at the same time. As Bob Iger explained at the time, the Marvel and Lucasfilm films and series could be offered as separate services or add-on packages and not be included in the Disney + streaming service.

In order not to split up the market even further, and since the Marvel and Star Wars films still fit into the family-friendly orientation, the decision was probably made against this step. So the superheroes and space travelers are also part of Disney +.
