PlayStation Store to cease sales of movies and series on August 31

Sony announces that it will no longer be possible to buy or rent movies and series on the PlayStation Store after March 31, 2021. The group makes it clear that fewer and fewer people use its platform. Users are turning more to streaming services.

Coming soon to the sale of movies and series on the PlayStation Store

It is via the PlayStation blog that Sony ad stop selling movies and series through the PlayStation Store:

At SIE, we do everything we can to provide the best in entertainment for PlayStation fans, and that means our offering must adapt to the needs of our customers. We have found that PlayStation fans are increasingly using streaming services that require subscription or streaming services whose business model is based on advertising. Taking into account this change in the behavior of our customers, we have decided to end our offers to buy or rent cinematographic or television content on the PlayStation Store from August 31, 2021.

Sony ensures that people who bought a movie or series from PlayStation Store will still be able to access it after August 31 from their PS4, PS5 or mobile device. However, it will no longer be possible to make new purchases.

Streaming is popular

Sony’s decision can in any case be understood. Streaming services are popular and keep getting bigger. At the last count, Netflix surpassed the 200 subscriber mark worldwide. It is 94.9 million subscribers on the side of Disney +. Other platforms, like Amazon Prime Video, do not publicly disclose their data.
