Password manager takes a drastic step – what that means for users

A popular password manager is realigning itself: At least part of the previous offer is left behind. But a replacement should be provided. That should even bring some advantages.

Dashlane is discontinuing apps for Mac and Windows: a replacement is already available

Dashlane should be “web-first” in the future, at least on the desktop. That means: Anyone who wants to access the popular password manager away from smartphones and tablets – on the desktop PC at home or on their own laptop – should use the web version in the future. On iOS and Android, users can still install a corresponding app.

Dashlane plans to discontinue all applications for Mac and PC in June 2021 at the earliest. Until then you can continue to use the software. There will be no more updates for “design, features and functionality”, writes Dashlane in his blog section Website.

The company justifies the step with a simple fact: the majority of users already use the web version of the password manager: the centrally stored log-ins can be accessed via a browser extension and the website dashlane.com access. A web app is also available.

What else belongs on the smartphone besides a password manager:

Easy to use, VPN included

Dashlane writes that the decision to concentrate entirely on the web in addition to mobile apps in the future ensures that customers can be offered a product of the “highest quality and safety”.

The testers from Stiftung Warentest particularly praise Dashlane’s ease of use and the fact that VPN is included. There are deductions for a comparatively high price of around 40 euros per year. Dashlane is also available as a family subscription – a license for six accesses costs 60 euros a year.
