Parents of terminally ill Charlie (1) start a great campaign for hospital patients
The lives of Islean and her husband Marc come to a sudden halt when they hear that their youngest son Charlie is terminally ill. To convert this sadness into positivity and to encourage other parents, they bring lucky rompers, cuddly cloths and hats for sick children at every hospital check.
“We know better than anyone what it is like to be in such a situation, so we want to give parents a smile in a difficult period.”
little boy
What? A penis? The birth of Charlie on April 30, 2021 suddenly takes a surprising turn when it turns out that against all odds he is not a girl, but a boy. “Fine,” says Islean. “We quickly switched from she to he, swapped the pink wardrobe for a blue one and started working on a new name. As long as he is healthy, that was the most important thing for us.”
Rare heart defect
Unfortunately, that turns out not to be the case, because after Charlie is hospitalized with the RS virus, doctors accidentally discover that he has a rare heart defect; a huge shock to the family. Islean: “We are now four heart operations and a resuscitation further and we are always wondering how much longer we can enjoy him. Two more days, two months or two years? No one dares to say it.”
An extra portion of happiness
To give the many appointments at Emma Children’s Hospital a positive touch, Islean has started a special promotion: every month she takes lucky onesies, hats and cuddly cloths to give to a sick child. “Just to put a heart to these children and their parents and to wish them an extra portion of happiness. Life with a sick child is sad enough.”
