OxygenOS threatened by the merger of OnePlus and Oppo?

The merger between OnePlus and Oppo would put OxygenOS at risk. A situation that could definitely bury the independence of the brand and its success.

A few days earlier, a note posted on the OnePlus forum announced a significant rapprochement between the brand and Oppo. This decision is in line with the change of course made by Pete Lau’s company. In the meantime, trade journalist Evan Blass has shared on an additional document. The language elements around this merger are available but would seem above all to mark the end of the OxygenOS overlay. A software that is the strength of the manufacturer which would be too bulky in the future.

Pete Lau says OxygenOS should stay on OnePlus smartphones outside of China

Below the publication, the CEO of OnePlus tries to reassure the fan community on OxygenOS. Despite the merger between the two entities, the software should continue to be installed by default on smartphones sold outside the Chinese market. However, according to the document revealed on Twitter, it was expressly requested that no answer be given to questions relating to integrations concerning operating systems. The document confirms, however, that OnePlus will become an integrated brand of Oppo.

This means that the construction of smartphones will be mutualized. Earlier this year, the Research & Development departments were merged. It seems that OnePlus would be entitled to more means thanks to the contribution of Oppo. Regarding the OxygenOS operating system, nothing seems to have been really decided. For the time being, the manufacturer’s smartphones would remain on the in-house software. In China, OnePlus phones are now launching under ColorOS. The future for OnePlus software is darkening. Indeed, the resources being merged, the technical support on two operating systems is very demanding.

The future of the manufacturer is darkening more and more

In recent months, the dynamic surrounding the BBK Electronics group seems to be reversed. Oppo has become the darling of the group, chaining up prestigious partnerships with international events. For OnePlus, once acclaimed for its ingenuity, independence is no longer at the center of the issues. The disappearance of OxygenOS could be inevitable without however the name of the manufacturer following it to the grave.

With the North, the Chinese manufacturer has won over an audience, especially in Northern Europe. The manufacturer’s new range is primarily aimed at excellent value for money. 5G smartphones have conquered a new audience, which OnePlus struggled to reach with its devices previously marketed at around 500 euros. Thanks to this, Oppo will be able to concentrate its efforts on its Reno and Find X ranges. A small ray of hope for OnePlus, its future will be in the hands of Pete Lau, who has been promoted to product director at Oppo. The co-founder of the brand will have the strategic future of his company in his hands.
