Oppo X 2021 concept: smartphone with roll-out OLED screen

Oppo X 2021 concept: flexible roll-up display

Manufacturer Oppo has given a small glimpse into the future at Inno Day. There, the Oppo X 2021 was shown to the general public for the first time. Thanks to a special mechanism, it is possible to partially roll out the screen, varying its width.

When fully rolled up, the display is 70 millimeters wide and has a 20-by-9 ratio. That makes the usable screen 6.7 inches in size. If you choose to roll out the screen, it will be 101 millimeters wide and the ratio will be 16 to 9.

This allows you to view content, use apps or play a game on a larger 7.4-inch screen. For example, if you want to watch a movie with a certain format, you simply adjust the screen to it. It only seems possible to use the device in these two modes.

The flexible OLED screen has a protective layer of only 0.1 millimeters. This layer must be as thin as possible to roll up the screen. To ensure that the extended screen remains straight, special panels have been fitted underneath.

Availability Oppo X 2021

Oppo is not the only manufacturer working on a smartphone with a roll-up screen. For example, TCL already showed a similar prototype earlier this year. Whether we will ever see the Oppo X 2021 or a type that resembles it on the market is still the question.

As far as we are concerned, this should certainly happen in order to compete with, for example, the Huawei Mate Xs or Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. These are both devices with a different form factor and a foldable screen. We recently took care of the Samsung phone and you can read our findings in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 review.
