OnePlus memo silences employees about OxygenOS’s future

OnePlus’ collaboration with OPPO is going to get even closer, that became apparent after the announcement of Pete Lau about the “new journey for OnePlus”. Many questions about the collaboration of the two companies remained unanswered. A leaked memo from OnePlus offers more explanation about future collaborations and the direction that OnePlus and OPPO will go.

Future of OnePlus

After years of standing side by side in the development of new phones, OnePlus and OPPO are entering into a closer collaboration. OnePlus says the partnership will positively impact the products the company ships; especially the software support will benefit from the close cooperation. After all, it means that the merged teams can spend all their time on software development for the same or similar hardware, a process that OnePlus and OPPO carried out separately until recently.

Other details about the impact of the OPPO-OnePlus collaboration remained unknown. A frequently asked question was about the future of OxygenOS, OnePlus’ software shell for Android. An internal memo sent to OnePlus employees asks for radio silence about the implications of the collaboration for OxygenOS and ColorOS – the latter software shell was developed for OPPO devices, but is currently being used in China on OnePlus phones.

The image of the memo, which rumor-maker Evan Blass posted on Twitter, states that employees should answer questions about OxygenOS that: “official announcements will be made through the OnePlus Forum.” Meanwhile, Pete Lau, CEO and co-founder of OnePlus, said in a forum post that OxygenOS will “stay on as the operating system for phones it releases internationally”, while ColorOS will only be deployed in China. Still, the memo seems to convey some uncertainty about the future of OxygenOS.

Products for iOS

OnePlus appears to have sent the memo primarily to reassure employees about the future of OnePlus. Answers to the questions in the internal memo indicate that many projects are continuing in the same vein, including the development of OnePlus’ high-end, Nord and IoT product ranges. A notable addition to OnePlus’s memo is that the partnership between OnePlus and OPPO should allow it to attract more iOS users to its ecosystem.

It is unknown what products or software services OnePlus intends to offer to persuade iOS users to shop at OnePlus. In principle, it could be as simple as earphones that can be controlled via iOS. It remains clear that the future of OnePlus will look different, and that OPPO will probably also have more say over the products that the company launches.

OPPO, Realme and OnePlus

In addition to the collaboration with OPPO, OnePlus also maintains warm ties with Realme. Like OPPO and OnePlus, Realme is part of parent company BBK Electronics. With its upcoming Nord 2, OnePlus would use the same hardware as the Realme X9 Pro. Earlier this year, it was also announced that OPPO, Realme and OnePlus would enter into a closer collaboration for the development of phones. Ultimately, the partnerships should lead to the low costs necessary to compete with companies like Xiaomi.

For now, the future of OnePlus’ Never Settle vision remains uncertain. Although OnePlus wants to highlight the benefits to users, such a close collaboration with OPPO is impossible without tinkering with your core values.
