OnePlus fools Samsung (and us) just as well
OnePlus shares the first images of the upcoming foldable smartphone. Or not? In any case, they are making a big deal out of Samsung.
On the same day that Samsung announces the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3, OnePlus also comes with something new. On the official OnePlus Twitter Channel the Chinese manufacturer shares a foldable smartphone. At least it seems so, but in reality it’s a cunning marketing stunt. In the United States you get the OnePlus 9 temporarily with a 50% discount. In other words, two halves, an entire foldable smartphone.
OnePlus shows ‘foldable smartphone’
The video below, including the reveal date, caused just as much controversy. Suddenly there was OnePlus, which as a relatively small smartphone maker seemed to be teasing a foldable smartphone. Enthusiastic fans could click on a link to the manufacturer’s official Instagram page.
There you can see the actual full teaser video at first glance. The makers of the advertising stunt really make it seem like it is a foldable smartphone from OnePlus. The video even appears in a walk to play; apparently the moving collage starts over and over again.
At the end of a cutscene, an anonymous hand comes to disrupt the dream of OnePlus fans. It turns out that two OnePlus 9s have been placed next to each other in a devious way. We were all so busy with foldable smartphones from Samsung, among others, that we weren’t paying attention for a while.
Anyway, OnePlus is cleverly benefiting from the hype that Samsung has to create for their foldable device. And let’s face it; A 50% discount on a top smartphone like the OnePlus 9 is worth a lot.
