‘One of the nicest things about being a mother is that I often feel like a child again’

One of the nicest things about being a mother is that I often feel like a kid again. Screaming down the slide together, tasting too much dough while baking cookies, experimenting with make-up, and one of my favorite activities: building sandcastles with triple moats and free-standing towers with sculptures and details. Often enough, my kids would run away to go down the slide while I was still diligently doing it. It must have looked pretty crazy to passers-by, such a grown woman who is building a sandcastle on her own.

Theme park

With spring on the way, I went hunting (before corona) for the best outings for myself and my sprouts. For example, we were in an amusement park that actually has everything for a perfect spring outing. We weren’t the only ones with this idea, but I was armed with a bag full of currant dumplings and lemonade. Nobody got us crazy!

Hours in line for a round in the bustard swan. “We want so badly, mama.” Once it’s your turn, you’re completely cross-eyed, because no one is kicking along, and finally arriving in the middle of the lake they want to get out again. Kicking to the side with sloshing armpits, but of course my swan steers again with a deviation, to stand in line with a sweaty mustache for the next challenge: the ship. The kind of ship that just doesn’t roll over, but almost does. As I approach green and wonder why you need to be at least four feet tall for this ship and not at least six feet, I look to the side and see my three fun letters enjoying themselves with their arms in the air. I want to turn green a hundred times for those faces.

nice and crazy

Being a mother is great! Eat cotton candy until you have a sticky pink mustache. Laughing out loud at the bucking of the young goats on the goat farm. Messing with finger paint. Now they still like that I want to participate in all the madness, that will be different in a few years. But when they grow up and maybe they can have children of their own, as a grandmother I will again be crazy about the bustard swan and in the sandbox. I can not wait.
