o2 will switch off a large area of the 3G network on July 1st
This moment has long been eagerly awaited, in a few days the time will come. How o2 just announced has, the 3G network in Germany switched off on July 1st. The whole process should be completed by the end of the year. Initially, 500 3G locations will be switched off on this key date. Two weeks later, it is the turn of another 1,000 locations. Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are initially affected. By the end of September 9,500 additional locations are to be reallocated. Then the cities of Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Essen and Düsseldorf as well as the states of Bavaria, Schleswig-Holstein, Saxony, Thuringia and the Saarland are affected. Finally, the last 4,500 3G locations in major cities such as Berlin, Hamburg and Leipzig are addressed, as well as all other remaining regions.
However, o2 does not just switch off 3G, but converts the systems to 4G. After more than 20 years of 3G mobile communications, the LTE reception will therefore be considerably better throughout Germany. 4G has many advantages over 3G and is intended to ensure that the mobile network operator can provide a better network.

What should 3G customers now consider?
Anyone who still has an old contract with a 3G network has already been activated for the 4G network by o2. In the end, you just have to make sure that you have a suitable smartphone. If you continue to use a 3G device, you will only be able to use the 2G network from now on. Anyone who wants to take advantage of the opportunity to get an attractive contract right now can do so at o2. There are special tariff offers for those switching to 3G.
Most o2 customers should actually already be equipped with a 4G device and contract. The 3G shutdown should therefore not have any negative consequences, but even advantages if you get a significantly stronger 4G network from o2 from July.
