Nokia 7.1 and Nokia 8 Android Pie update now available

The Finnish HMD Global has already added a number of Nokia smartphones to Android Pie, and now it’s time for two devices. Users of the Nokia 7.1 and Nokia 8 can get started with the update.

Android Pie for Nokia 8 and 7.1

The Nokia 8 was already planning for a while to get an Android Pie update and now it’s finally here. HMD Global CEO Juho Sarvikas says on Twitter that the update will be released today for all owners of the Nokia 8. It is a phased rollout, which means that it will take several days or weeks before you receive the update.

The rollout of Android Pie goes a bit faster for the Nokia 7.1, because several Dutch users let them know they have already received the update. The Nokia 7.1 was recently released in the Benelux and is part of the Android One program. As a result, you are guaranteed two years of software upgrades and three months of monthly security updates.

The Nokia 8 is not an Android One device, but has received many updates since its release. However, it seems that Android Pie is the last major update for the phone: it originally appeared with Android 7.1.1 (Nougat) and last year already received an Oreo update . However, the Nokia 8 will receive security updates in the near future.

Because the Nokia 8 is not an Android One phone, some features of Android Pie are missing in the update. This way, users can not get started with Adaptive Battery, the app actions and also Digital Wellbeing is not present. Also the new camera interface from Nokia is missing and because the smartphone has capacitive navigation buttons, the navigation control does not work.

This is new in Android Pie

Android Pie introduces, among other things, a new gesture control, which replaces the traditional navigation buttons. The Adaptive Brightness function automatically adjusts the screen brightness according to your preferences. Adaptive Battery looks at the apps that you use little, and then ensure that they do not consume too much energy. In the comprehensive Android Pie review you can read all about it here
