No PS5, Xbox or Switch – why my PC is all I need

Which is better – PC or console? Many gamers have been asking themselves this question for several decades. GIGA editor Johannes explains why he is a passionate PC gamer.

More and more people are deciding against a fat gaming computer. According to Statista there are now even more console players than PC players in Germany. Even so, the rivalry between the two platforms is still very prominent.

Especially during the Corona crisis and the associated lack of graphics cards and consoles, some players had to reset their priorities. This had serious consequences for one or the other.

Stupid who exactly is building a PC at the time …

Since Nvidia ushered in a new graphics card era with the 3000 series, the market has been on fire. Thousands of scalpers grabbed loads of new hardware and then sold it on at overpriced prices.

If you want to have some decent graphics card at the moment, you have to dig deep into your pocket or be extremely patient. Not a good time to start a hardware project … Hello! My name is Johannes and I have in November 2020 put together my gaming PC.

Do you want to guess what’s wrong with the device? I’ll give you a tip: It starts with “graphics” and ends with “-karte”. For over half a year I have had a decent tower PC that has to deal with a rickety GTX 960. I basically have a racing bike with training wheels.

Are you a console player? And if so, which console is right for you? Figure it out!

Why doesn’t the fool just buy a console?

The PS5 and Xbox Series X are also struggling with bottlenecks. However, it is currently much easier to get a new console. Still, I stay true to my PC – and for good reason.

In my free time I do a lot of things Indie and strategy games. The latter in particular can now also be found for various consoles – but the controller control has never really convinced me.

There are few games that, in my opinion, work better with a controller than with a mouse and keyboard. And these are arcade and racing games. Yes, I even preferred to play Red Dead Redemption 2 (in hideous resolution) with a mouse and keyboard. The reason: Humans are creatures of habit.

Not a console child? No problem for me!

Already in my childhood I have always gambled on the PC – I didn’t have a console. The exception was an iconic handheld – the Nintendo DS Lite. The associated games were just too expensive for me.

I preferred to spend the money on two or three PC games (or Lego). Yes – two to three PC games! Thanks to GreenPepper and various Steam sales, several PC games could be purchased for the price of a DS game.

And I still see this trend today. Of course, there are also many sales for console games. But nothing – except maybe the Steam Summer Sale – tops the weekly free games in the Epic Games Store.

Of course there are a lot of uninteresting games here. But every now and then, real pearls are like GTA 5, Control or Civilization 6 included. Surprises like For The King are always welcome in my library.

So the Pile of Shame continues to fill up – but you can already find out about this topic its own article at spieletipps. The only fact is: meanwhile I have distributed about various launchers 400 games collected.

Like a magpie in search of glittery stuff. The problem: My “glitter stuff” is mostly PC exclusive. Then as now, I don’t see any reason for myself to switch to a console – most games wouldn’t be able to “move” anyway.

I’ve got used to my PC, my game library, and mouse and keyboard controls, and I’m happy with them. But there is another reason why consoles are unattractive to me – my consumer behavior.

GIGA editor Daniel has a completely different opinion on the subject:

PCs – the perfect overall package for every application

During my studies and also in my private life, I had to deal with a number of programs that are very resource-hungry. A powerful PC is not only worthwhile for me for gaming, but also for it.

I also use my PC a lot to watch Netflix, YouTube and Co. Often while I’m gaming – thanks to the second screen, none of this is a problem. All of this would certainly be possible with a console … but it works that way. And pretty good at it.

Maybe I’m just too lazy to change now. But when it comes to PC gaming, my motto is and will remain Never change a (reasonably good despite bad graphics card) running system!

Now is the PC better than PS5, Xbox and Switch?

Everyone has to decide for themselves. The eternal debate about what is better or not now only leads to a lot of unnecessary nonsense anyway. Just use what you feel like doing. Console kids and PC patriots are both the same in the end – passionate gaming lovers.
