The soldier remembered

During the First World War, a soldier is found just behind the Belgian front line. He’s not hurt, but doesn’t know who he is. He is taken to an asylum for the insane. Four years after the war, the director of that asylum placed an advertisement in the newspaper, hoping to find family that way. Then it turns out that his name is Amand Coppens, and that he has a wife, Julienne, and two children. Julienne has waited for him for eight years and searched desperately for him and, against the advice of the doctors, takes him home the same day. He does not remember her, nor does he recognize the house in which he appears to live with her. It’s a strange, uncomfortable situation, even for her. He turns out to have a photo studio, where he now has his picture taken in uniform in front of a painted battlefield setting with war widows. His wife tells him about their past and he tries to become the man he once was, who she sees in him, and that’s how they fall in love again, much more in love than they ever were when they married years ago.

As he becomes more comfortable in his new life, he gets more nightmares about his time in the trenches. Like many soldiers in World War I, he did horrible things. He finds it worst that, when he relies on his nightmares, he enjoyed those horrors; he cannot forgive himself for that. The Soldier Remembered is a novel about the concept of ‘identity’. Amand has no real identity because he has no memories from before 1918. He has to manage in the world without the hold of the past. Anjet Daanje describes the story from Amand’s perspective, where events, memories and nightmares merge as if in a stream of thoughts. That gives this novel its own sensitive style. It is a Dutch novel of European allure.
