New emoji will cause a stir. For example, a pregnant guy is not missing

After several months of delay, the Unicode consortium finally managed to finalize the Unicode 14.0 standard. It adds 37 new emoji in various skin tones to our devices, which together represent 112 unique characters. This will probably happen at the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022. The Android Central portal informs about the novelty.

Among the new emoji we find several new moods, such as a melting face or a smiley face that salutes. For example, emoji trolls, slides, lifebuoys, bubbles and disco balls are now being added to the extensive list. There must also be new smileys depicting hands, in all skin tones, of course.

Many users feel that their current emoji do not represent them

Unicode also took one controversial step in this release and decided to add to the collection the emoji of a pregnant man and a pregnant person whose gender cannot be precisely determined by appearance.

To some people, adding more inclusive smilies may seem like a big deal. However, studies have shown that many users from around the world often feel that the current selection of smileys does not represent who they are and what they look like. A report from Adobe showed that up to half of the users surveyed shared the same feelings, with most believing that emoji can also help spark conversations about important cultural and social issues.

Other studies have shown that emoji are a great tool for facilitating communication across language barriers. Some users would even prefer smiley communication to face-to-face and telephone conversations.
