New 5G smartphone from HMD should convince with robustness

Nokia license holder HMD has presented two smartphones and a feature phone. While the Nokia XR20 is particularly robust, the Nokia C30 comes with a large display and battery.

HMD only launched six new devices at the beginning of April, including two representatives of the X series: the X20 and the X10. Now follows with the Nokia XR20 a particularly robust and resilient companion, which according to HMD can withstand more than most users would ask of it. The Nokia C30, in turn, is said to have the largest battery and display of a Nokia smartphone to date. The week-long battery life of the Feature Phone 6310 should convince. But let’s take a look at the devices one after the other.

Nokia XR20 with many outdoor functions

The Nokia XR20 has a 6.67 inch display with a resolution of 1,080 by 2,400 pixels. The eight-megapixel selfie camera is built into the display via a so-called punch hole. The brightness of the screen, which HMD specifies as 550 nits, and the robust Corning Gorilla Glass Victus speak in favor of outdoor use. In addition, it should be possible to operate the display with gloves and wet fingers. There is a 48-megapixel and a 13-megapixel camera in the rear.

Under the hood is a Snapdragon 480 5G from Qualcomm, which, however, promises a rather lower mid-range level. At least the SoC has a 5G modem on board. There are also four or six gigabytes of working memory and 64 or 128 gigabytes of internal memory, depending on the version. Up to 512 gigabytes can be added via the micro SD card slot. Google Drive is also supported. According to HMD, the Nokia XR20 will be equipped with Android 11 from the factory. HMD promises “four years of monthly security updates, three years of the latest software upgrades and three years of warranty”.

Endurance tests by Roberto Carlos and Lisa Zimouche

In order to underpin the special robustness, HMD had ex-soccer player Roberto Carlos and freestyle world champion Lisa Zimouche carried out some endurance tests with the Nokia XR20. According to the manufacturer, the device, certified according to IP68 and the military standard MIL-STD 810H (robustness / water resistance), withstands extreme temperatures, falls from a height of 1.80 meters and still works after an hour under water. Incidentally, the battery of the Nokia XR20 has a capacity of 4,630 mAh and wireless charging (Qi, 15 watts) as well as 18 watt fast charging.
