Netflix: our Top 10 movies to watch with the family

On Netflix, there is a selection of films ” Youth and Family“, But we often don’t come back to the same great classics seen and reviewed: Back to the future, Jurassic Park, The Goonies, Gremlins, Men in Black, Shrek, Ghostbusters, AND, Jumanji, etc. If you’ve already seen all of these masterpieces and are looking for more, follow the guide …

Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

On Netflix you can find almost all animation films from Ghibli studios: Pompoko, Nausicaä, My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited away, The Cat Kingdom, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, etc. But our darling is The Howl’s Moving Castle with her bittersweet story: Sophie an orphan who works in a hat shop is cursed by a witch. She then goes on an adventure and will meet colorful characters. Okay, it’s pretty hard to sell it to you spoiler-free so trust us: it’s excellent. If you watch it with children, don’t be afraid to put the dubbed version in French.

Hook (1991)

It’s a classic, like those mentioned at the beginning, but you can easily miss it. This is the sequel to Peter Pan. Peter Banning is a businessman who is not a very present dad. For Christmas, he returns to the orphanage where he grew up and in the night his own children are kidnapped. He will then have to go to save them in Neverland… A very good adventure film that has not really aged with Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts and
Bob Hoskins.

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

This is a very good version of the tale Snow White with Kristen Stewart (Twilight saga), Charlize Theron and
Chris Hemsworth (Thor). Forget the Disney adaptation: this princess does not clean, she kicks ass. A very nice movie with successful special effects and a believable villain.

Mowgli, Legend of the Jungle (2018)

As the name suggests, it is an adaptation of the Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling published in 1894. If we are familiar with the 1967 Disney adaptation, it is not known to honor the origin story: Mowgli was a child raised by wolves and he grew up under the protection of the Baloo bear and the Bagheera Panther. Be careful, this is not the 2016 Disney movie directed by Jon Favreau, this Netflix adaptation has been entrusted to Gollum (Andy Serkis)! Please note, this is a somewhat dark film that we only recommend from the age of 10.

Stardust, the Mystery of the Star (2007)

A very good film which did not meet its audience at the time despite the presence in the casting of Robert de Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. This adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s book tells the story of a young man who went to look for a star that took on human form. Everything is nice in this film: the sets, the villain… The love story is a bit “ass-cul la praline”, but we have a good time anyway.

Stuart Little (1999)

Well, it’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a cool little movie about differences and the acceptance of others. Eleanor and Frederick Little want to adopt a second child, but at the orphanage they fall under the spell of Stuart… a mouse. The couple adopt the rodent, but their son George, who wanted a little brother, won’t like it. The situation will also be complicated with the Snowbell cat …

Jack the Giants Hunter (2013)

Here is an “underrated” movie as JCVD fans say. It is an adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk and Jack the Giant Slayer, two tales probably written in the 18th century and with many similarities. The story is little known here even if you must have seen adaptations in cartoons: Jack, a young farmer, is fascinated by the legend of Erik, a former king who defeated an army of invading giants of a celestial kingdom by controlling them with a magic crown …

The 12 Labors of Asterix (1976)

Without doubt one of the best Asterix of this period. Tired of losing to the die-hard Gauls, the Romans start to think they are gods. This annoys Caesar and he launches a challenge to the village of Abraracourcix: take up 12 jobs as Hercules did in his time. It is of course Asterix and Obelix that we send to coal …

The Funeral Wedding (2005)

Be careful, it is a somewhat dark film which could frighten the most sensitive children. It must be said that the story tells the adventures of Victor, a young man who finds himself married by mistake (!) To the corpse of Emily who leads him into the world of the dead. For this film, Tim Burton uses the technique of volume animation with puppets as he had done in The strange Christmas of Mr. Jack. If you like friend Burton …

Babe, the Pig turned Shepherd (1995)

Yes the title is a little ridiculous, but this film still almost won the Oscar for best film in 1996 and it left with the statuette of the best visual effects: all is good in the pig! The story ? Babe a pig destined to end up in sausage is saved by a farmer. In his new environment, Babe seeks to make himself useful and aspires to become a “shepherd pig”. Ha… The drugs of the 90s…
