Netflix for students: no discounts on streaming service?

Netflix is ​​one of the most popular streaming services in Germany. Many online services, as well as museums, theaters and other cultural assets, offer students and trainees extra discounts or discounted subscriptions. At Netflix, however, you seem to be looking in vain for such discounts. We’ll show you here on GIGA how you can still get the top series and films from the video-on-demand provider for less.

Spotify and Amazon are leading the way: if you use the special student subscription, you only pay half the usual costs. But if you don’t want to miss out on exclusive series such as “Stranger Things”, “House of Cards”, “Star Trek: Discovery” or “How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast)” even as a student, you can’t avoid a Netflix subscription. Netflix does not currently offer a direct student subscription, but you can still save money.

No Netflix Discount for Students – Save Money Together

There is no hourly discount at Netflix, but as a student it is very easy to get cheaper to Netflix. Anyone who has settled in a student dormitory or flat share for studying can easily and legally share the Netflix subscription. So writes Netflix itself:

“The Netflix Service and any content viewed through the Service is for your personal, non-commercial use only and may not be shared with anyone who does not live in the same household.”

As long as you are housed in a household, you can share the Netflix subscription and thus the costs with your roommates. There are two options here:

For 2 people:

The Standard subscription costs 12.99 euros per month and gives you the opportunity to two devices at the same time for Netflix to use. If you share the costs, you will only pay barely 6.50 euros per month and you can both watch Netflix in HD independently of each other.

For 3-4 people:

The Premium subscription costs 17.99 euros per month and offers you the option of using up to four devices at the same time Watching Netflix. If you split the costs among three people, you will pay just under 6 euros, with four people it is then only 4.50 euros per month.

When sharing the account with several people in the same household, however, please note that all persons the same login and the total amount for the monthly subscription costs is only debited from one account. So it’s best to set up a common email address and agree on a password for Netflix access. In the end, only the monetary aspect remains to be clarified – you have to decide for yourself whether you buy an extra Netflix cash register in the shared apartment, each set up a permanent transfer or you have your food in the canteen once a month.
