Netflix: account sharing ends today in France, you have to pay an additional €5.99/month
That’s it, the end of Netflix account sharing is a reality in France. The streaming service has sent an e-mail to its subscribers to notify them of the change.
“Your Netflix account is for you and for the people who live with you – your household. You can easily watch Netflix on the go or while traveling, on your personal devices or on the TV where you are »indicates the platform in its e-mail.
What’s going on with account sharing? Netflix offers two solutions:
- Transfer profile: Anyone who uses your account can transfer a profile to a new subscription that they will pay for themselves.
Add an additional subscriber: You can share your Netflix account with someone who doesn’t live with you for an additional €5.99/month.
Goodbye Netflix Account Sharing
The price in France is therefore €5.99/month to add a person to your account who does not live in the same household. The rate varies by country (it’s €3.99/month in Portugal for example).
Netflix will ask its subscribers to set a primary location, to ensure that anyone living in the household can use the account. Netflix clarifies that it will still be possible for subscribers to watch content while on the move/travelling, which is done through temporary access codes.
But how does Netflix detect devices within a household? “We use information such as IP address, device ID and account activity from devices connected to the Netflix account”the platform previously said.
Unsurprisingly, many subscribers criticize Netflix’s choice. Several of them are sharing messages and screenshots showing that they are unsubscribing from the streaming service.
