Birthday
Robbie was overjoyed with the racing bike he had been given for his eighth birthday. For me such a present was not necessary: I was terrified that he would cross the street with it like a jekko. But Simon thought we should trust Robbie. And so the ultramodern model, including gears, was packed up before Robbie’s nose not much later. Under one condition: that it would normally be used for cycling. No stunts, wheelies or other dangerous stuff.
In the starting blocks
Robbie couldn’t wait to show his bike to his friends the next day. He was dressed faster than ever, stuffed his breakfast in and before I knew it he was on the starting blocks at the gate.
The first half of the route went smoothly, but when Robbie learned how the gears worked, he raced ahead of me at a rapid pace. “Look how fast I’m going!” he yelled as he looked at me. I saw the parked car get closer and closer, but Robbie didn’t slow down. And before I could yell for him to watch out, he slammed his head against the rear window of the car.

Robbie was startled and after a few seconds he started to cry. Not surprising: because of the blow you immediately saw a big bump on his forehead. Miraculously, there was no visible damage on the car – except for a spot on the windshield.
Because of the huge blow, we cycled back home. Fortunately, after a call to the doctor, it all went well and Robbie stepped back on his racing monster the next day in good spirits. Of course he had learned his lesson right away.
