‘My daughter (2) always looks great too’

Hilke Zuithof (28) is together with Don (33) and mother of Candice (2). She owns a fashion store and webshop.
“I grew up in a man’s world. My father, uncle and one of my older brothers have a car company together. The showroom was next to our house and as a little girl I used to play with toy cars in the garage. You could also see that toughness in my clothing style: few dresses and skirts, but mainly pants and jackets. As I got older and discovered the world of makeup, I started to dress more feminine. Pink tones, ruffles, heels.
Nowadays everything I wear has a feminine touch. For example, with a jogging suit I make sure that there is a silhouette in it, so that my curves come out well. I combine every outfit with a bag, matching shoes or a belt. Without accessories I feel bald, incomplete.
Own business card
On average, I spend 350 to 500 euros per month on new clothes. I have my own women’s fashion store with varying collections, of which I myself am the calling card – that gives me a great excuse to shop.

Candice also always looks tip-top. She wears matching clothes and her hair is neatly cut with matching pins. There are undoubtedly people who think: terrible, such a styled toddler. But my hands also sometimes itch when I see other children’s outfits. Actually, it’s only good that everyone has their own taste, because otherwise all those children would wear the same.
Decide yourself
Candice can sometimes look disapproving when I take her clothes out of the closet. Like: no mom, not that sweater today. It’s already starting, I think. In that respect she is a copy of me, because at that age I already wanted to decide for myself what I would wear. With one difference: Candice really is a girl-girl. She secretly snatches my bags from my dressing room, puts on my heels and grabs a pair of earrings, only to admire herself in full regalia in the mirror. Clearly a fashionista in the making.

My followers on Instagram often ask, “How come her clothes don’t get dirty?” That always makes me laugh out loud. As a baby I could sometimes change her three times a day because of spray diapers and of course her outfits don’t stay clean now, because she is a child. And that’s how it should be – the washing machine is running.”
