much more compact, rounder, flatter and more beautiful? (+poll)

Renders have surfaced of the Google Pixel 8 and the Google Pixel 8 Pro. On the images we see that both devices are very similar to their predecessors, but have changed considerably on a number of points. We are curious about your opinion about these images.

Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro renders

The famous rumor spreader OnLeaks has published renders of the Google Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro in collaboration with MySmartPrice and Smartprix. On the images we see the design of both smartphones and this seems to be broadly the same for both devices as with the predecessors. Yet we do see differences, especially with the 8 Pro. For example, the cutouts for the cameras seem to be getting bigger, the 8 Pro is getting a sensor and it now has a flat screen. Below we take a closer look at the images.

Pixel 8: Just 5.8 inches

We start with the ‘regular’ Pixel 8. And let’s first look at the similarities between the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 7. At first glance, both smartphones look very similar. Both devices have a horizontal camera island on the back. Just like the Pixel 7, the cameras are hidden in a pill-shaped recess. This cutout seems to be a lot larger with the Pixel 8.

If we then continue with the differences, we see that the Pixel 8 has thinner screen edges and is a lot rounder and less angular than the Pixel 7. This makes the Pixel 8 – in combination with the camera hole in the center of the screen – appear from the front a bit like a Galaxy device from Samsung.

Most notably, however, OnLeaks thinks the Google Pixel 8 will have a display that’s just 5.8 inches in size. This is a lot smaller than the 6.3-inch panel of the Pixel 7. At 5.8 inches, the phone will be one of the smallest high-end Android smartphones at the moment.

Pixel 8 Pro: flat and new camera sensor?

OnLeaks has also put images of the Google Pixel 8 Pro online in combination with Smartprix. Google’s new flagship is very similar to the ‘regular’ Pixel 8, but – just like the Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro – it gets a telephoto lens. This telephoto lens now seems to be placed in the ‘camera pill’ and will therefore not have a separate recess – as was the case with the Pixel 7 Pro.

The big difference with the Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro is that the Pixel 8 Pro will probably have a flat screen without rounded corners. This often looks a little less beautiful and luxurious, but works better in practice. Just like the ‘regular’ 8 Pro, the Pixel 8 Pro also has rounder shapes and thinner screen edges compared to its predecessor. The screen will be smaller at 6.52 inches.

Finally, we see an extra camera hole under the flash. We don’t yet know what’s hiding in there. For example, this could be a ToF sensor, a laser focus or an additional camera. With the latter you can think of an extra telephoto lens or macro camera. Although the latter would be unlikely, since the Pixel 8 Pro will probably again have a wide-angle lens with auto focus. This often allows you to take much better macro photos.
