Mortal Kombat 11 has been bought by 4 million Vortex players since October 2019
Developers from NetherRealm have reason to celebrate really big. The last part of the Mortal Kombat fighter series is once again breaking historical records and becoming the most successful in history. To date, the game has sold more than 12 million units, surpassing the penultimate episode, whose sales numbers were one million lower. The 12 million looks even more impressive when we add that last October – less than a year ago – the counter of copies sold was around 8 million. This is a respectable result, which underlines not only the continuing interest in Mortal Kombat as such, but also the ability of people around the designer Ed Boon to surprise fans with new elements and bring them in a quality corresponding to modern demands.
In total, the Mortal Kombat series – whose history dates back to 1992 – has 73 million units sold, which, with simple mathematics in virtual an average of 2.5 million units sold each year. This must be pleasing for the developers, regardless of the fact that there are, of course, many more successful series, but they do not have to be based on such a specific genre as fighting games. “When Mortal Kombat started less than 30 years ago, I never dreamed that the series could reach such numbers,” says Ed Boon, creative director and co-author of the series. “We have some of the best fans in the world and we appreciate the support they have shown us over the years,” he adds.
NetherRealm is now focusing on its next project and after more than two years of supporting Mortal Kombat 11, DLC for the game, including characters, has come to an end.

On the other hand, it is necessary to remember that the era of MK11 is coming to an end – the developers officially announced two weeks ago that they had said everything they wanted to say and would start to focus on a new project. This means that no new content will be added to the game, although developers will still be responsible for the technical condition. Compared to current trends, where developers are trying to keep titles that fit into the formula of strong multiplayer games for as long as possible, NetherRealm’s move seems incomprehensible, but Mortal Kombat’s authors remain relatively consistent in this regard and fans probably didn’t expect anything else. As for that project, it is speculated that it could be a continuation of Injustice, but in reality these conjectures are not based on very solid foundations and at the moment we cannot be sure. Nevertheless, the fight with the heroes from DC Comics would certainly be a pleasant refreshment, but until the official announcement, we would only speculate.
