Morning rush hour: 43 percent of children have breakfast in front of a screen
The research also shows how long children eat breakfast and what they prefer to eat.
Sofa or dining table?
According to the National School Breakfast, the reasons why children do not (always) have breakfast are: no hunger (21%), not wanting to have breakfast (14%), convenience (13%) or no time (7%). It is striking that only 86 percent of the parents surveyed have breakfast, compared to 96 percent of the children. Where a child has breakfast differs per social class. 86 percent of children from the highest social class eat their breakfast at the dinner table. That is about half of the lowest social class. 45 percent of that group have breakfast on the couch. However, 4 out of 10 families have been eating breakfast together more often since the corona time.

Preferably a bam
What’s on the plate in the morning? Especially bread (77 percent). Almost half of the children eat a sandwich every day. You make them less happy with porridge, yogurt or cottage cheese. That is on the menu at 33 percent. Also fruit at breakfast is not that popular. 70 percent of children never eat that in the morning. If they do eat it, they prefer to choose an apple, pear or banana. The research shows that children have an average of 19 minutes to eat breakfast during the morning rush hour. During the National School Breakfast, from 1 to 5 November, many Dutch children have breakfast in class. This way they learn in a fun way how important this meal is.
