More sales in minutes than many earn in life

When you look at these numbers, it’s no wonder that Amazon’s logo is always reminiscent of a happily smiling mouth: The sales of the shipping giant and other leading tech companies are beyond the imagination of many people. If you calculate the turnover per minute, it becomes more manageable – and yet with such sums of money you sometimes catch your breath.

Many employees in Germany can only dream of what the big tech companies can implement in a few minutes as income – and that counted over a lifetime. Of course, hardly anyone expects to earn as much as an employee as some companies make sales. Nevertheless the dimensions diverge so far that one can hardly imagine it anymore.

That’s how much money Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft make

The so-called Big Five of the technology industry earn unimaginable sums of money with their hardware and software products and services, about which we at GIGA report regularly. The English business portal CNBC has the Sales of the so-called GAFAM companies – Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft – from the first quarter of 2021 and calculates how much money the US tech giants have made per minute.

No employee needs to compare with this, but looking at the numbers can still leave you feeling sick. Statista has compiled an overview based on data from CNBC:

Front-runner Amazon has a turnover of almost 700,000 euros – per minute

Amazon is therefore the undisputed leader. The group has an average per minute between January 1 and March 31, 2021 694,426 euros in sales. This is followed by Apple and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, in positions 2 and 3. Microsoft and Facebook occupy positions 4 and 5 with sales of 167,473 euros per minute. The Big Five also included two “younger” high-income earners, Tesla and Netflix.

The numbers do not correspond to the net profit of the companies. That is why we use the average for classification Gross income in Germany approach. According to the Federal Statistical Office, that was in 2020 3,975 euros for full-time employees. This brings us to € 47,700 per year before taxes and without any bonuses. The average employee in Germany earns gross in one year a little more than Netflix was last able to generate in one minute in revenue. After 10 years of work, we end up somewhere between Alphabet and Apple.

What you should consider when returning to Amazon, you can see in the video:

Average Germans earn almost 2 million euros in their working life

Calculated over a whole working life – for the sake of simplicity we assume around 40 years – We earn 1,908,000 euros gross. Amazon, as the largest in terms of sales among the Big Five, sets this amount in under 3 minutes around. The profit margin of the company is smaller, but ultimately only the net income is actually available to employees.

The comparison shows: Many employees are likely to have their heads spinning on the basis of the values that the large tech companies implement. But it also shows What is the relationship between the turnover of large, international corporations and the income of those who (co-) generate itwhether as a customer or an employee.
