Mercedes teases “the most efficient electric car” with a range of over 1,000 kilometers
As part of the realignment of the passenger car division, Mercedes-Benz has revealed details about two new models. One is to become the efficiency world champion; The Erlkönig from the EQS luxury SUV was on display.
Mercedes is accelerating the transition to electromobility and is showing small glimpses of upcoming models. In addition to the measures in the course of the new “Electric only” doctrine with investments worth billions, the group also revealed that it is planning the next technological leap in the model range. The EQXX should stand for this change and demonstrate the highest level of efficiency. Mercedes names the year 2022 as the release date.

New e-SUV is not based on combustion models
In the luxury sector, the premium manufacturer wants to follow up with the EQS with an SUV on the same platform. The still nameless car will have a more seamless, holistic and futuristic look, revealed Head of design Gordon Wagner for the British magazine Autoexpress. Wagner already revealed specifications such as the engine variants with 245 kilowatts (333 hp) and 385 kilowatts (524 hp) as well as a range of 770 kilometers. Now the prototype of the model could be seen in a short Twitter video. Observers consider Maybach variants of the two EQS formats to be likely.
Mercedes EQXX with a range between 1,000 and 1,200 kilometers
Another vehicle is running at Mercedes under the project name Vision EQXX. During the conception, the development team should work closely with racing engineers who deal with electric drive systems in Formula E. The car, which was mentioned for the first time at the end of 2020, is expected to exceed the range of the current front-runner EQS. In 2020, Mercedes managers even spoke of the Stuttgart-Nice and Shanghai-Beijing route – there are 1,200 kilometers between the two metropolises in China. Head of Development Markus Schäfer is currently giving the number of “over 1,000 kilometers”. However, Schäfer does not want to achieve this by installing ever larger batteries, but with greater efficiency.
Streamlined efficiency
But that’s not all: the manufacturer plans to build the most efficient electric car in the world. At “normal speed” on a freeway, it should travel 100 kilometers with a single-digit kilowatt-hour amount. Auto Motor Sport calculates that this would correspond to ten kilometers per kilowatt hour. Not even the most ambitious electric cars can currently do that. as The ADAC is the efficiency test winner currently the Hyundai Ioniq Electro with 16.3 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers at the top. In the sketch of the EQXX, observers can also see where part of this efficiency is supposed to come from: the lower air resistance. The body silhouette shows an extremely aerodynamic car.
Mercedes relies on 2-speed gearboxes and 800 volts
The upcoming models should have permanently excited synchronous machines, two-speed gearboxes and 800-volt mains voltage. Schäfer confirms that the company, together with cooperation partner Sila, is moving in the direction of battery cell development with silicon anodes. The group recently announced that it would expand its own cell production.
