Mega success, but the price remains cheap

The discounter Lidl has had a heart for its customers for a few days and sells the better FFP2 masks at a budget price. Success is not long in coming, but the masks are not more expensive. A quick update on the situation.

Update from 01/31/2021: The sale of the super cheap FFP-2 masks was and is a complete success for Lidl nationwide and soon led to empty shelves in some places. Some people already compare the situation with the “run” on the toilet paper in the first lockdown.

But don’t worry, because it looks like there will be inexpensive FFP masks in the future. The discounters Lidl, Rewe and Penny confirmed towards the FAZ the price of 99 cents for such masks. According to the information available to us, Netto will also join in the next week and also sell FFP-2 masks for only 99 cents – so it remains cheap.

Original article:

The currently sold FFP2 masks cannot yet be found online at Lidl, but GIGA discovered them during a sample in one of the largest Lidl branches in Germany in the tranquil Bad Schandau (Saxon Switzerland). Certainly not the only purchase option nationwide, so it is worth stopping by at Lidl at home.

FFP2 mask at Lidl only 99 cents

The discounter only wants 99 cents for the FFP2 mask. In view of some “pharmacist prices” of 8 euros and more per item, this is a real hammer price. And what do we get for it?

The masks are each individually and hygienically packed in plastic. Important information on correct use can be found on the back of the cover. Anyone who has not yet used an FFP2 mask should read the information carefully, because only when used correctly does such a particle filter mask actively protect the wearer against possible infection with the corona virus. We also find out where and by whom the masks were made, not surprisingly, it is a Chinese supplier. Much more important: The information about the European test center. The FFP2 masks received the necessary CE certification in Finland at “SGS FIMKO OY”, based in Helsinki.

This high-tech mask cannot currently be bought from Lidl or anywhere else, but it is an interesting project:

Certification review: thumbs up

In addition to the standard and the manufacturer, the appropriate CE mark with the number “0598” is also printed on the masks themselves – everything is correct. This impression continues in our quick test. The multi-layer mask fits well, doesn’t smell of chemicals and is very comfortable to wear. In short: you get decent performance and protection for 99 cents. Interesting: On the Lidl website in Austria the discounter is already advertising FFP2 masks, in the “Alpenländle” they are even cheaper – only 59 cents. Still, the 99 cents in Germany are a really good price.

Good to know: The corona measures were tightened just this week. From now on, medical masks must be worn in public transport and shops. Even cheaper surgical masks are sufficient for this (exception Bavaria, FFP2 is mandatory here), but FFP2 masks alone also actively protect the wearer from infection. Ergo: are clearly the better choice at the present time.
