Magnolia app lets you date without swiping

Today a new dating app for Android is launched: Magnolia. Using a scientific algorithm, singles are matched based on their personality and the character they are looking for in their loved one. Swiping is no longer there.

Co-founder of Magnolia, Joris Blijenberg, thought the dating world has become increasingly superficial in recent years: “It was the reason for us to come up with a new way of dating. Let’s not focus on the outside, but on the inside, because that ultimately predicts success in love. Magnolia’s scientific algorithm puts an end to endless getting lost in the plethora and brings love back to online dating.”

Dating via the Magnolia app works differently than you are used to from most dating apps. When you create a profile on Magnolia, it is not a matter of uploading photos and swipe but. No, Magnolia provides singles with an extensive profile builder. They should take about fifteen minutes to do this. According to Blijenberg, this creates a scientifically substantiated profile of your personality, based on the Hexaco model. This model takes into account six different dimensions, namely: friendliness, emotional stability, extroversion, conscientiousness, autonomy and integrity.

Thanks to Magnolia’s questionnaire, it becomes clear how singles themselves score on these dimensions and what they would most like to see in their future love.

This way of profiling and matching has been developed in collaboration with a team of scientists, led by Prof. Reinout de Vries of VU University Amsterdam. Based on your profile, Magnolia’s algorithm gets to work. The algorithm looks for cross-matches: does someone have the character you are looking for – and you the character of him or her? Then there is a match.

The makers of Magnolia want to end swiping in apps like Tinder. Singles who use Magnolia are shown three real potential matches every day. This way they can take the time to take a closer look at these matches and profiles. Is there a click in between? Then both click on the eye – to show that they have a crush on someone. If a match follows, they see exactly how compatible they are by viewing the results and the conversation function opens.

The Magnolia app currently does not excel in the number of stars in the Play Store. Hopefully the problems described will be resolved soon. Would you like to give it a try?
