LOL: Sweden owes man 1.4 million euros over Bitcoin

A nice starting capital for a released prisoner: he is entitled to 1.4 million euros from the Swedish treasury because of the appreciation of Bitcoin.

You sometimes hear it: “If only I had invested in Bitcoin fifteen years ago!”. Because there was a time when one Bitcoin was worth more or less a dollar or euro. Currently, the price is more than 40,000 euros for one Bitcoin. No real estate can compete with that.

Disadvantages of ascent

Especially good news for people who bought Bitcoin a few years ago for little money and can now cash out. Bitcoin’s rise is bad news for Sweden’s treasury. When a criminal was arrested in 2019, his assets were taken, including 33 Bitcoins. These were worth relatively little at the time, but due to the current madness, the increase in value is explosive again.

Debt

The result is that the man is again entitled to 33 Bitcoin, which the Swedish government converted to 14 million Swedish kronor or almost 1.4 million euros. And yes, the man is entitled to these stolen Bitcoins. A total of 36 Bitcoins were taken, 33 of which were never sold. According to the law, these must be returned to the man whose prison sentence has ended.

Lesson learned

Prosecutor Tove Kullberg says it’s an expensive lesson in how to handle these kinds of new situations. For example, you should not look at how much Bitcoin you need to pay debts (and therefore only take in so much), but simply take everything because it is money in itself. This way you prevent every criminal in Sweden where Bitcoin has been taken from now getting a nice starting capital of perhaps 1.4 million euros for his life outside the cell. An expensive lesson.
