Lyssa (35) and Chantal (38), mothers of Bram (5), took part in an ayahuasca ceremony.

“At first I thought Chantal was joking when she suggested I join a nightly ayahuasca ceremony. A friend of hers had done it and unraveled the secret of life, she claimed. It would be a journey to your true self, to your deepest fears and secrets, and provide insights that the average person does not get around to throughout his life. In addition, ayahuasca in South America would be perfectly normal. It was not without reason that it was now a hype among highly educated people without a significant appetite for narcotics? Well, Chantal wanted that.

Ayahuasca

We had used magic mushrooms once, in a gray past – long before Bram was born. And sometimes, when we were in the mood and Bram was with his grandparents for a weekend, we took a pill. But ayahuasca is not something to be taken lightly, we had to think about this. Didn’t milder psychedelics make people psychotic?

Chantal was not to be relented, so I wanted to call us this life changing event don’t deny it: who knew what it would yield. We searched dreadfully for reliable shamans. Speaking to experts in the field, lived alcohol, sugar, meat, and sleep-free drugs for weeks – because we have to -, supplanted the fact that we would probably throw up all night, and booked an evening. In a kind of hippie village with a giant tipi full of mattresses, the ceremony had to take place that night. I wasn’t even nervous.

Nothing

Maybe it was due to my practical nature. The fact that I usually act on the basis of reason, rarely allow myself to be guided by emotions and do not really hang on to the past. But the two glasses of ayahuasca tea did almost nothing. While my wife moaned into the most impossible positions, an attendant by her side and completely into another world, I saw more intense colors and psychedelic figures, but above all I felt nauseous. No special insights or encounters with the other side – despite my grandmother’s necklace in my pocket.

After a journey of hours that, in my opinion, lasted no more than sixty minutes, the ceremony was over. Exhausted we fell asleep, only to wake up crystal clear after two hours. However intensely Chantal seemed to be absorbed in the drug during the ceremony, she had not experienced it as special as the promise had outlined. “From now on just have some wine again?” she laughed on the way home. ‘Just give me tea,’ I said. ”
