“I’ve never seen her leave a room so quickly”

Wonderful, such a weekend away with the whole family. An abundance of free childcare for the kids, finally time for each other and access to a sauna. Only you shouldn’t forget the lock on the door during your rolling session.

Lana (40), mother of Wouter (11) and Sander (10):

“We collectively thought the idea was a fantastic idea: my parents and two befriended couples, and all their children with supporters – including us – on holiday together, so we booked a colossal Tuscan villa. Perhaps most of all, my husband and I were looking forward to our own bedroom, two floors away from our children. With all the commotion we’d be the last to bother them, we guessed.

Once there, our holiday turned out to be everything we hoped it would be. Except for one detail: my parents in the room next to us. After extensive lovemaking I was walking around the room in the nude when my mother walked in without knocking in the morning. “Well, I’ll never see my girl like that again,” she cried, jokingly tapping my bare buttocks. To add in horror, “Oh, they’re a little wet.” I have never seen her leave a room so quickly.”

Cita (38) lives with Steve (35) and is mother of Syl (3):

“Every year we go away for a weekend with the whole family. A house full of people – eight adults and the same number of nieces and nephews – guarantees a weekend of fun. When everyone decided to take a dip in the pool, Steve and I sacrificed to stay with our two-year-old niece who was taking her afternoon nap.

“We had been on our way for a while when we suddenly heard a tapping on the window”

With everyone out the door and my niece sleeping in her bed – or so we thought – we made the sauna unsafe. We had been on our way for a while when we suddenly heard a tap on the window. There my niece stood with her teddy bear in hand, staring at us. I let out a scream, which caused my niece to cry uncontrollably.

When my sister-in-law came back, I confessed it honestly. We were the running gag for the rest of the weekend, but I could handle that. I just hope it doesn’t traumatize my niece.”

Mirjam (40) is married to Sam (48) and mother of Olivia (9), Ben (7) and Lila (5):

“The fact that my mother-in-law has the key to our house is worth gold. When things go wrong at work or one of the children suddenly has to be picked up from school, she is always ready. But: there are also disadvantages, we discovered.

Yes, we agreed that she would bring Ben home early Saturday morning after a sleepover. We would then go to football with him. Only, we had completely forgotten about it. In the shower we were just ringing in the weekend – perhaps a little noisily – when we heard her calling. ‘Hello? Hello! You’re not arguing, are you?’

With a towel wrapped around my hair, I stormed downstairs to reassure her that there really was no mess. “Next time I’ll ring the bell first,” she winked.
