‘I’ve never felt so lonely’
Coosje Smid (32), the daughter of singer Ernst Daniël Smid, gave birth to son Zonne in early August. The brand new mother now shares an emotional memory on Instagram: in the same hospital where Zonne was born, she had an abortion at the age of sixteen.
‘When I unexpectedly turned out to be pregnant with my first boyfriend when I was sixteen, there was only one option. My mother arranged an abortion in the hospital, together with the GP’, writes Coosje. ‘It went very quickly, it completely passed me by, but when I was in the recovery room with terrible stomach pain I have never felt so lonely. Did I want this? Was this the right option?’

Her abortion was never talked about at home and ten years later she had to go to the same hospital again to have cysts removed. ‘Endometriosis’, continues Coosje. ‘Getting pregnant would be very difficult, the doctor informed me, I would have to start a ‘program’ in time if I ever want to become a mother.’
‘You complete the circle’
Yet on August 1, 2022, Coosje’s dream came true: she gave birth – again in the same hospital – to a healthy son. ‘Dear Zonne, the sun has started to shine again for us since you came, from day 1 that you came to live in my belly. You’ve come full circle and I’m so happy to be your mama.’
