Apple Podcast Subscription Starts June 15

That reports The Verge. The website received confirmation from Apple that the podcast subscription will roll out worldwide on June 15. Actually, the company wanted to roll out the service last month with the iOS 14.6 update for iPhones, but this was not possible due to technical problems.

Podcast creators can determine the price for their subscription themselves. The minimum price in the United States is 49 dollar cents per month, which is converted about 0.40 euros.

The benefits of a podcast subscription

The content of the subscription is also determined by the makers. For example, paying for podcasts gives listeners access to additional episodes of their favorite show. Earlier access to new episodes is also possible.

Creators don’t have to create podcasts exclusive to Apple. The company does state that there must be a “good reason” for listeners to pay. For example, paying subscribers should be able to listen to podcasts without ads.

Apple charges a 30 percent commission on all income podcast creators receive. Podcast creators also have to pay a flat fee of $19.99 per year (about $16.40) to be able to offer subscriptions through Apple.

Battle in podcast land

The battle in podcast land has finally started. Spotify has also announced a paid podcast subscription. A salient detail is that you cannot close this via the Spotify app on an Apple device.

Instead, you have to take out the subscription through a separate website. Spotify is doing this because the company has been fighting for years against the commissions that Apple charges for all purchases made through their platforms.
