Is your iPhone getting old too fast? Germany thinks so

As far as Germany is concerned, the iPhone is too quickly an outdated smartphones. That has to do with Apple’s policy.

Manufacturers have a limit on the support of a device. Not only because the hardware is outdated, but also from a financial point of view. Ultimately, you earn little from a customer who collects free updates on the device for years. As a manufacturer, you hope that the customer will eventually buy a new one. This story holds true for the Apple iPhone, with Germany pushing back.

iPhone in Germany

The German authorities believe that from now on Apple will release updates and security patches for a new iPhone for seven years. The proposal has been put forward by the country to the European Union. According to Germany, this would be better for the environment. The proposal is obviously less good for Apple’s wallet.

With current regulations, manufacturers in the EU provide updates on smartphones and tablets for up to five years. As far as Germany is concerned, the EU extends this rule to seven years.

The plan may not even sound that crazy. Today’s smartphones are a lot better compared to four or five years ago. If you are a little frugal, you can safely last seven years with a device. The battery will of course no longer work so great, but the camera, processor, storage and working memory of today’s high-end smartphones are well prepared to last for many years. (via Heise)
