iPhone will no longer have a notch from 2022, but a ‘Samsung camera hole’

From 2022, the iPhone will no longer have a notch. Instead, Apple processes all sensors for Face ID and the selfie camera in a hole in the screen, just like phones from competitor Samsung.

Rumor: iPhone 2022 has no notch

That claims Ming-Chi Kuo, which regularly shares accurate information about unannounced Apple devices early on. The smartphone insider shares in a note that next year’s iPhone will receive a significant design change.

The most striking is that from then on the device would no longer have a notch, but a so-called ‘punch hole‘. This hole includes the selfie camera and the necessary sensors for Face ID, or face unlocking.

The OnePlus Nord has a ‘pill-shaped’ camera hole.

Kuo does not reveal how big the screen hole of the new iPhone will be. The insider is also still in the dark as to which iPhone 2022 models get such a punch hole. Kuo writes in the memorandum that at least “a few” devices will be equipped with it.

Other (Android) phone manufacturers, including Samsung and OnePlus, have been working with holes for the selfie camera for some time. The advantage of this solution is that it takes up less screen surface than a notch. This gives you more display space as a user.

History of the notch

Kuo is a well-known name in the Apple community and his claims are coming out on a regular basis. Still, it is wise to take the rumor with a grain of salt. The screen notch of iPhones is relatively large because it contains a lot of sensors that are necessary for Face ID. Apple’s facial unlocking technique works a lot more accurately than competing Android phones.

Since the iPhone X, which came out in 2017, all high-end iPhones have been given a notch. This caused a lot of criticism at the time, but the screen notch became commonplace in recent years. Many smartphone manufacturers try to make the notch as small as possible, or experiment with alternatives, including punch holes.
