iPhone 15 Pro gets new LiDAR scanner

More and more is becoming clear about the new iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to the latest rumors, both phones will get a better LiDAR scanner.

Such a scanner uses the light in the environment to estimate distances and depth. With this technique it is therefore possible to use Augmented Reality apps, for example, or to measure your height with your phone.

LiDAR stands for Light Detection And Ranging, the scanner uses the light to determine distances in a room. The sensor on the iPhone 12 Pro (Max), the iPhone 13 Pro (Max) and the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) can be found in the black dot on the camera island. The expectation is that the LiDAR scanner will also only come to the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max with the iPhone 15 series.

Sony is going to produce new LiDAR sensor

The fact that the new iPhones get a different LiDAR scanner has to do with a new supplier. Sony will supply some – if not all – parts for the new sensor with the new iPhones. Lumentum and Win Semi previously provided these parts.

Apple probably chose Sony in the production of the new LiDAR sensor to make the scanner more energy efficient. The new parts ensure that the new sensor performs faster and better, but also uses less energy than the old LiDAR scanner. As a result, your iPhone battery will last a little longer.
