iPhone 14: calling and texting via satellites

Rumors about calling and texting with an iPhone via satellites have been around before. Last summer – just before the launch of the iPhone 13 – it was reported that the new flagship can connect to satellite networks in an emergency.

Apple didn’t say anything about it during the Apple event, but reliable analyst Mark Gurman of Bloomberg already reported that the technology for satellite communication is probably already in the iPhone 13, but that the function will only be officially rolled out in 2022.

In a new article, Gurman makes these statements again. Apple would like to release the app and calling via satellites for the iPhone this year. When exactly, he did not say. We may hear more about this at WWDC in June, when Apple presents iOS 16.

Gurman also doesn’t say which iPhones support communicating with satellites. Undoubtedly, it concerns the new iPhone 14 series, which Apple will announce during an event in September. But the iPhone 13 (mini) and iPhone 13 Pro (Max) may already support satellite communication.

Only for emergencies

The satellite link is an emergency function for people who get stuck in remote areas where there is no mobile coverage. It is only possible to contact emergency services. Via the ‘Emergency Message via Satellite’ function you send them a text message in the Messages app. They are then gray in color and may only be short.

You can also call and this is intended for extreme emergencies. The feature is similar to the iPhone’s emergency SOS notification, but works via satellites. If you call, your location will be sent to emergency services during the call and your SOS contacts will be notified.
