‘iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max retain design with notch’
While most Android manufacturers have since moved away from the notch, the iPhone still has a bite out of the screen. And we also see the much-discussed notch on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, various sources report.
Read on after the ad.
iPhone 14 with notch
Everything points to at least one iPhone getting a redesign by 2022. It would be a so-called punch-hole design, where the notch disappears and the camera is incorporated in a small hole in the screen. The sensors for Face ID will probably be placed below the display.
According to several sources – including the reliable Ming-Chi Kuo and the Korean The Elec – the major design change is only for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This means that the two cheaper models (the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max) have a notch design.
However, something important changes with the two cheaper models. The mini model (5.4-inch) disappears and a Max version (6.7-inch) returns, which is the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini disappointed in sales, so Apple is again betting on a larger size.
Or four iPhone 14 models with notch?
We do not rule out the possibility that all iPhone 14 models – including the Pro iPhones – will have a design with a notch. For the new punch hole design, Apple must place the Face ID components below the display. This is a challenging task, as the system must scan faces through the pixels of the screen without interfering with the display. The question is whether the technology will be ready in time.
Instead, Apple can move to an under-display fingerprint scanner – something several Android manufacturers have already accomplished. This poses less of a challenge, but it’s unlikely that Touch ID will become the sole biometric security feature of the Pro iPhones. Face ID is much more secure, so the fingerprint scanner would be a step back.
If Apple does not succeed in housing Face ID under the screen, then the design of the iPhone 14 (Pro) may not change much. We’re likely to hear more rumors about Apple’s plans in the coming months. Do you want to stay informed of the developments? Sign up for our newsletter:
