iPhone 13 Pro’s A15 chip is more powerful than iPhone 13 (mini)

From the iPhone 13 mini to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, they’re all powered by the A15 Bionic chip. But the A15 of the iPhone 13 Pro is not the same as that of the iPhone 13.

Read on after the ad.

A15 Bionic chip more powerful with iPhone 13 Pro

In recent years, the processors of the regular iPhones were identical to those of the Pro models. This year it is different. The GPU (the graphics processor) of the A15 chip that is in the iPhone 13 Pro models is more powerful than that of the regular iPhone 13 models.

The GPU of the regular iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini has four cores, just like with the A14 Bionic chip from last year. According to Apple, they deliver 30 percent better performance than competing smartphones. The A15 Bionic chip of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max has an extra core. The five cores would be good for 50 percent better performance than the competition.

More GPU cores

The extra graphical power is useful, for example, when editing videos, playing demanding games and the new camera functions. The fact that the Pro models have more GPU cores has to do with the addition of ProRes support. This requires extra from the graphics processor. With the cheaper iPhone 13 models, filming in ProRes is not possible.

The fact that the regular iPhone 13 models have to do less with a GPU core may also have to do with ‘chip binning‘. With chips that are made at nanometer level, there is a good chance that some errors will creep in during production. For example, one core does not do it. Instead of throwing those chips away, the chips are then used for cheaper models.

A15 Bionic chip

The CPU of the A15 is the same with all iPhone 13 models. As with the A14 Bionic, the processor has two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. However, the improved Neural Engine can perform no less than 15.8 trillion operations per second; the A14 did it with 11 trillion. There is also an improved image signal processor.
