iOS 15: iCloud storage increases to transfer data

Apple decided to make a move with iOS 15 and increase iCloud storage when making a backup so that it can transfer data from one device to another. But beware: the increase is temporary.

On its site, Apple indicated :

Now when you buy a new device, you can use iCloud backup to transfer your data to your new device even if you are running out of storage. iCloud will give you as much storage space as you need to complete a temporary backup, free of charge, for up to three weeks. This allows you to automatically transfer all your apps, data, and settings to your device.

Let’s say you have the free iCloud tier and therefore have 5 GB of storage. Your combined data may weigh more than 5 GB. In this case, Apple will allocate as much storage as you need to do the iCloud backup. You can then upload the data to your new device. After three weeks, the allocated free storage disappears and you will revert to the one you had before. Obviously, the data stored during the three weeks will be deleted from Apple’s servers.

Note that this also applies to customers who pay for a subscription for iCloud storage but have reached the end of it. Here too Apple will temporarily offer additional storage to allow data backup and repatriation.
