IKEA and Sonos turn a speaker into a work of art

Nice, good music. But those speakers… they are often an eyesore. IKEA and Sonos have now unveiled a speaker in the form of a work of art. Will this be a solution for many people?

Read on after the ad.

IKEA and Sonos unveil painting-like speaker

IKEA and Sonos have teamed up and now come up with a speaker that resembles modern painting: the SYMFONISK. The flat device is 55 by 40 centimeters in size and has a depth of only 6 centimeters. Due to the layered design, the speaker looks even thinner.

At the front of the speaker you will find a large canvas with a modern print. The canvas is removable, so you can design the artwork to your own taste. IKEA offers different designs, because everyone has different tastes. Unfortunately you cannot create your own designs.

Users are given multiple display options. For example, the speaker can be hung on the wall, but it can also be placed on a surface thanks to fold-out feet.

Wireless connection

The speaker is operated via your smartphone or tablet. Thanks to AirPlay 2, you can connect your iPhone wirelessly to the speaker. The speaker is controlled via the Sonos app. The SYMFONISK doesn’t support Siri voice control, so there’s no point talking.

You can, however, connect two different speakers, so that you can enjoy a surround sound experience. These really have to be two SYMFONISK speakers; according to Sonos and IKEA, the sound must match perfectly. This is only achievable by connecting exactly the same speakers.

More IKEA speakers on the way

According to IKEA, more speakers are on the way. “There are more rooms we want to fill with sound.” The SYMFONISK speaker will be available from July 15 in all IKEA stores and online, for a price of 179 euros. The interchangeable cloths will be available online from September 1. These cost 15 to 30 euros.
