“Whatever happens, I didn’t give birth at home, I knew from the moment I held the positive pregnancy test. I wanted pain relief. When Nanne was born, it was extremely good, I saw no reason to do things differently now.

My first delivery took three hours. Reason to be alert, the midwife warned. I remembered that, so at the first contraction my husband was already on the phone with her. “I’ll report you’re coming,” she said, and I crawled into the backseat lying on my side — the only possible position — and my husband dashed down the emergency lane of the highway.

In the backseat
The ride passed me by like a blur. I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t feel my arms and legs. Everything got in my way, even if all I was wearing was a king-size nightgown and maternity underpants.
Out of the way, I screamed as we passed under the barrier of the hospital parking lot. The midwife – on the phone all the time through the speaker, but I had not received any of that – was ready. I gave birth to our Niels in the backseat of our Toyota. He had the umbilical cord around his neck, so I was so happy that we were standing in front of the hospital entrance. ”
