Huawei is not afraid of another Google attack

For Huawei, the smartphone market is getting tighter. The Chinese company will not let itself be beaten down and also wants to survive Google’s new restriction with regard to the Android apps without much damage. But is that really feasible?

HarmonyOS: Huawei is not afraid of ABB Android apps

Those who switch from the Android operating system to HarmonyOS can continue to use the normal Android apps. This works because HarmonyOS is essentially based on Android and can handle APK files. Only the apps that rely on Google Play Services are not running. Exactly that doesn’t suit Google and one will shortly only accept ABB apps in the Google Play Store. To be able to open this format, you need the Google Play Store. This should have many advantages for developers, but for all other companies like Huawei that have to get by without the Play Store, this is a gigantic disadvantage. According to Huawei, this is not the case.

Wang Chenglu, head of software department at Huawei, says that ABB apps have no negative effect on the HarmonyOS user experience and will not slow down development progress (source: Global Times). Instead, Chenglu claims that Google’s ABB technology is the same as HarmonyOS ‘Atomic Services. Such apps offer many more options for users and developers. Under HarmonyOS, the apps can even be run without installation.

The problem for Huawei is getting bigger with ABB apps

Even if Huawei states here that the company sees no disadvantages from Google’s ABB apps, that is not true. Is current HarmonyOS still relies on Android apps in the previous APK format. The most important apps are not yet running in Huawei’s own format and will probably not be for a long time until there are more users. That’s why Google wants to urge developers to use the ABB format so that both Huawei and Microsoft will have problems in Windows 11. Because of such approaches, Google is currently being criticized anyway.
