Huawei founder praises competition: “Best smartphone in the world”

In a sensational interview, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei praised a major competitor of the Chinese manufacturer. This has the “best smartphone in the world” on offer, according to Zhengfei. The 76-year-old also spoke about the future of Huawei and sent a message to the new US administration.

Before the US sanctions stalled Huawei’s meteoric rise, the company was on its way to becoming number 1 in the smartphone business. A victim of Huawei’s success was Apple, which temporarily slipped from second to third place. In contrast to Huawei, Apple does not have to deal with sanctions and was recently able to achieve gigantic successes with the iPhone 12. Exactly this cell phone seems to have done the Huawei founder too.

Compared to the South China Morining Post Ren Zhengfei described the iPhone 12 as “the best smartphone in the world.” Remarkable praise, after all, Huawei and Apple were bitter competitors in the smartphone market until recently. The homage goes even further, because the Huawei founder also said that European premium buyers would love Apple.

The unusually open praise can possibly be interpreted as a sign that Zhengfei no longer sees Apple as competition for Huawei. The US sanctions hit the manufacturer so hard that competition with the big names in the industry is out of the question – now it’s all about survival.

For the former officer of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, however, there is no doubt that Huawei will survive. “My confidence is growing that Huawei will be able to survive this situation,” said Zhengfei. Huawei’s 5G technology should also contribute to this. Nevertheless, the Huawei founder would like the new US government to have a more open policy. Recently, however, the Biden administration made it clear that this will probably only remain a wish in the near future.
